COMMUNISM 100 YEARS AFTER THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION

Jan Banning set off in search of locations in five countries (India, Italy, Nepal, Portugal and Russia) where the ghost of Communism is still alive and sometimes even dominates local mind-sets. In cities, towns and villages, he avoided the clichés of flag-waving demonstrations and instead documented the ‘private face of Communist parties: ‘the interiors of their offices with their often exuberant iconography of red flags and banners, portraits of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and Mao, and pictures of national party leaders and ideologues. He has also photographed local party activists, staring solemnly into the lens from behind their desks. Banning’s images are distinguished by their careful composition and lighting.

Jan Banning ging op zoek naar plekken in vijf landen (India, Italië, Nepal, Portugal en Rusland) waar de geest van het communisme nog steeds rondloopt en soms zelfs de lokale mentaliteit domineert. In steden en dorpen vermeed hij de clichés van demonstraties met pontificaal vlaggezwaai, maar documenteerde in plaats daarvan het ‘private gezicht van communistische partijen’: de interieurs van hun kantoren met hun vaak uitbundige iconografie van rode vlaggen en spandoeken, portretten van Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin en Mao, en foto’s van nationale partijleiders en ideologen. Hij fotografeerde ook lokale partijactivisten, die vanachter hun bureau plechtig in de lens staren. Bannings beelden onderscheiden zich door hun zorgvuldige compositie en belichting.
